Sichuan-Tibet Railway Enlisted as a Major Construction Project

Sichuan-Tibet railway is the second plateau railway linking Tibet with other provinces after Qinghai-Tibet railway. It starts from Chengdu, passes through Ya’an, Ganzi, Changdu, Linzhi and so on, and ends in Lhasa with the total operation length of about 1,900 km and construction length of 1,800 km.

In December 2014, Lhasa-Linzhi section of Sichuan-Tibet railway has been officially initiated to construct. Meanwhile, Chengdu-Ya’an section has been in construction. Currently, railway construction workers are overcoming difficulties such as complicated geological condition, alpine hypoxia, cold weather and so on and striving to enhance the construction of these two sections. The current construction is quite smooth.

The geological condition along Sichuan-Tibet railway is complicated. Lin Shijin, deputy chief engineer of China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co., Ltd, who is in charge of the survey and design of Sichuan-Tibet railway, mentioned that constructing Sichuan-Tibet railway meant to build the most difficult and enormous railway roller coaster in the most complicated and dangerous mountains and valleys.

After completion, the journey period between Chengdu and Lhasa will be expected to shorted to 13 hours while current journey will take about 48 hours.
